Setting Yourself Up for Success

It is easy to say you want to be stronger or eat healthier. The challenge is starting to establish the habits necessary to accomplish and maintain those goals. Follow these tips to set yourself up for success. You can do this!

S.M.A.R.T. Goals

S.M.A.R.T.  stands for specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-based. Take the time to think of each one of these categories when setting goals for yourself. For example, “I will run 3 days a week for 30 minutes each.” Be confident in your goals. It is extremely demotivating to not accomplish a goal because it was unrealistic.  Establish goals for the next week, month, 6-months, and year. NOW WRITE THEM DOWN!

Plan ahead

Keep a schedule. Every Sunday I write down when I plan on working out that week and what type of workout I will be doing. Treat it like an appointment that you can’t miss. This alleviates the stress of trying to squeeze in a workout whenever you have free time.

Meal prep is another great way to make your week easier. I find a couple new recipes every week and prep on Sundays. A few of my regular meals are blueberry overnight oats, broccoli chopped salad with a honey mustard vinaigrette, and cilantro-lime chicken with a mango avocado salsa.

Make it Fun

Mix it up. Try different classes, run on a different trail, or grab a friend for a partner workout. Changing up your fitness routine makes it more fun and keeps you looking forward to your workouts.

Track your Success

Start a fitness journal. Recording your progress allows you to look back on all your hard work and motivates you to be consistent with your exercise routine. There are many free apps that you can download to log your workouts.

Health fitness assessments are an additional option for those looking to more thoroughly track their success. During a session a professional evaluates your general health, body composition, cardiovascular endurance, strength, and mobility. These assessments are now available at AddeoFit!

Reward Yourself

You deserve to treat yourself! It is hard work to consistently exercise and maintain a healthy diet. Set benchmarks for yourself, choose a reward that you look forward to, and treat yourself once you accomplish your goal. You should be proud of your successes.

Remember Why You Started

Sometimes life throws something your way or you just hit a wall. It happens to everyone. The key to pushing through it is reminding yourself why you started. Think of your “why” and WRITE IT DOWN! Put it on a post-it note on the fridge, write it in your journal, or save a picture to your home screen. Have it somewhere that you can easily see to motivate you when you need it most.
